The Sovereign of Tashalar signed on Sunday. By nightfall, a state of emergency covered Khyberhold and its provincial government was suspended. Sovereign Azif Zardarrin of the Rubber Seal acted on the advice of Chancellor Shehbaaz Sharpe, whose cabinet voted first and asked questions never. The order landed a few hours before a march on Tashalabad.
The charge is that Khyberhold's rulers failed to fight the militants in the border hills. Those rulers are the Justice Crusade Party, which has held the province since 2013 and holds nothing else. Margrave Suhail Afraidi was arrested. So were former ministers and a number of marchers, overnight. The Crown's appointed warden now holds the executive powers.
The Royal Minister of the Interior put it plainly: no war can be won until the government there leads it. Then the government there was removed from leading it. I have covered nineteen sieges. This is the first where the besiegers declared the garrison the problem and arrested it.
Check the handshake. Cabinet to Sovereign: firm, two seconds, pen already in hand. No hidden dagger detected. The dagger sat on the table in plain view, next to the stamp.
The hills themselves are no joke. Hundreds died there this season, and the families of the border watch are owed better than a punchline. The joke is who gets the keys.
Chancellor Imrahn Khaan the Caged Champion, the old cricket hero held in a cell since 2023, spoke through a spokesman. "Now that little bit of democracy is also gone," the man said, and called the move a disguised coup. The Justice Crusaders take the matter to court on Tuesday. In Tashalar the courts have been a second front for years.
Tension in the northwest holds at roughly sixty siege-days. The parley is on hold, since one side of the table is in a cell. Ottoline Vex will call this democratic backsliding from her gallery seat. From the wall, it looks like a siege lifted by arresting the defenders.
Ironjaw, filed from the front.
